A petition calling to erect a life-sized Wolverine statue in Edmonton’s City Hall has garnered more than 1,000 digital signatures.

The fictional comic book character is said to have been born in Alberta — which, according to the petition, is good reason to erect a statue.

“Not many popular or exciting fictional characters are born Canadian,” the petition reads. “But superhero and adventurer Wolverine isn’t just Canadian, he’s an Albertan too.

“I think it would make a lot of people really proud to live in Edmonton and raise morale to erect a life size statue of this character in City Hall, or even perhaps Churchill Square or the Alberta Legislature Grounds.”

The petition also said the statute would serve as a “symbol of strength, perseverance in the face of tragedy and overall heroics.”
