Edmonton police charged a 43-year-old man with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a nurse near the Misericordia Hospital four years ago.

Devon Hugh Saunders is charged with shooting his ex-girlfriend Shernell Pierre, 26, on Mar 12, 2008, and then torching her car on 170th Street at 87th Avenue.

Police says new testimony from witnesses who finally came forward allowed them to make an arrest.

"The crime though, however, was so horrific that we found that there was a certain level of fear among some of the witnesses," said Staff Sgt. Dennis Storey.

Police believe Pierre was shot at 11:30 p.m. while driving her car shortly after leaving her job as a licensed practical nurse at the Misericordia Hospital. They believe the same person then set the vehicle on fire before leaving the scene.

Pierre's Bible was the only thing that survived the blaze, a fact that did not surprise her sister, Jolin Thompson.

"It was a sign," she said. "It wasn't just by accident that the Bible survived."

Saunders will make his first court appearance on Thursday morning.
