Donovan's was "one of the few Edmonton-based, family-run businesses that survived through the bad years in the late 1980s and 1990s when our downtown took such a hit," said Jim Taylor, executive director of the Downtown Business Association.

"They … survived because they were a quality business and so well run and so well regarded, I think, in Edmonton. So as I say, I am very sad to hear that they seem to be gone."

The store, most recently at 10507 109 St., closed down last weekend. It was originally called Mr. Donovan and occupied a store on Jasper Avenue from 1961-1977. No reasons were given for the closure.

"They are unique and they are so far and few in between that particularly the women of Edmonton are going sorely miss that opportunity," said Peter Mercer, executive director of the North Edge Business Association.
