A fire during the noon hour Wednesday forced the evacuation of one floor of a high-rise apartment in west Edmonton.

The blaze on the 12th floor of the building at 165th Street north of 87th Avenue was reported at 12:40 pm .

Firefighters had the fire under control within 20 minutes. Two people were treated at the scene.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion just before a balcony burst into flames, though fire investigators have not confirmed those reports.

"It sound like water was being pressure washed above me," said Kyle Slattery. "I looked up to see the flames wrapping around the building from the apartment."

The fire was contained to the one suite.

Investigators determined it was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette butt.
