Residents were evacuated from Edmonton's Meadowcroft Seniors Residence Monday evening after a fire broke out on the building’s second floor.

Emergency crews responded to the site of the fire north of Westmount Shopping Centre just after 5 p.m.

Residents were told to leave the building — a process which Deputy Fire Chief John Lamb described as "complicated" because many of the residents have difficulty walking, and some having to be taken by stretcher.

Lamb said one resident was taken to hospital. Several other residents were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

A number of city buses were dispatched to keep residents warm and dry while crews worked to put out the fires.

As of Monday evening, most were allowed to return to their rooms.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
