A fire at an east Edmonton RV park was caused by a propane explosion that was set on purpose, fire investigators say.

A man in his fifties was injured in the blast that occurred at 18th Street and Yellowhead Trail around 3:40 p.m. Tuesday. Three RVs were destroyed, causing $100,000 in damages. The fire was brought under control by 4 p.m.

"All we heard was an explosion and the house that we were in started to shake," said Kayla Frank who made the call to 911. "I started to look at what happened and the whole place caught on fire over there. I think it was an RV."

The injured man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He was believed to be inside one of the three RVs.

A propane tank nearby prompted fire officials to evacuate a nearby hotel as a precaution.

The case has now been turned over to Edmonton police.
