Edmonton property taxes jump an average of $63
Education portion of residential property taxes dips to keep hike relatively small
Edmonton homeowners will pay on average $63 more in property taxes this year.
City council has set tax rates for 2015, resulting in a 2.1 per cent hike for the average single-family home and an average 7.6 per cent for business properties.
For a typical house valued at $401,000, the property taxes will amount to about $3,100 a year — about $2,200 for municipal programs and services and almost $900 for the provincial education tax, said Rod Risling, city manager for assessment and taxation.
The education portion of residential property taxes this year was lower than the city expected when the budget was finalized in December.
Council decided earlier this month to reduce the overall property tax increase, rather than collecting additional revenue to maintain the tax increase predicted in December.
Tax notices will be mailed out May 22, with the payment deadline on June 30.
