Officials say a fire at a duplex in Edmonton's Jackson Heights neighbourhood on Saturday evening caused more than $500,000 in damage.

The fire, which broke out in a duplex near Jackson Road and Jellett Way at around 7 p.m. MT, was contained to one side of the duplex.

Officials say it appears the fire originated in the garage, but the cause of the blaze has not been determined.

Neighbour Jehne Morse told CBC News she noticed heavy smoke from her patio deck just after 7 p.m.

As she went inside, Morse said she heard several explosions in the area.

Fire investigators say nothing inside the home exploded nor did any vehicles parked nearby, so it's believed the sound may have been tires on a truck popping.

Morse said she and other neighbours watched from a distance while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

No one was inside the unit at the time, and no one was injured in the fire.
