Two house fires in Spruce Grove in the past week were set deliberately, leading police to suspect there is an arsonist on the loose.

Last Wednesday, a fire broke out at a home in the Fieldstone neighbourhood with the owners asleep inside. They escaped without injury and the home was saved.

Early Sunday morning another fire was set at a house in the same neighbourhood. The home and the house next to it were badly damaged.

The fire started in a garbage can placed next to the house. The homeowners, who were out of the house at the time, had put it on the curb.

"What's concerning to us is that is not the first garbage can fire that we've seen this summer," said Cpl. Kim Mueller. "And this is the second one in less than a week that the garbage can was next to the home and started the home on fire."

Mueller said there have been smaller fires in porta-potties and garbage cans all summer.

RCMP arrested three suspects in another fire on Saturday. They don't know if that fire is connected to the others.

Police have also stepped up patrols in some parts of Spruce Grove.
