About 60 firefighters were called to a fire that quickly gutted a vacant building on 118th Avenue, early Tuesday morning.

A passerby noticed smoke coming from the abandoned commercial building at 94th Street around 5:15 a.m., said fire Capt. Shayne Page.

After a quick look inside, firefighters retreated from the building and began trying to save neighbouring businesses.

Investigators don't believe anyone was inside.

The avenue was completely blocked off for most of the morning. The fire was contained within a couple of hours.

With the windchill temperature at -40 C, firefighters were forced to fight the cold as well as the fire, said Page.

"We have to be aware of their safety and health and make sure we're not getting anybody freezing," he said. "The cold weather also creates some challenges for our equipment and water flow."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Edmonton Police have confirmed that a fire at the same location on Jan. 31 was deliberately set.
