A new place for residents of southeast Edmonton to catch the bus has officially opened.

Construction has been completed on the $12-million Meadows Transit Centre at 17th Street and 40th avenue.

The Mill Woods facility features 17 bus lanes, security cameras and a 320-space parking lot.

The project is a partnership among the municipal, provincial and federal governments.

"It’s a great  facility. We hope that there will be multi-family [dwellings] built around here, which will make great use of this space," Mayor Stephen Mandel said at Thursday’s launch.

"It’s an exciting opportunity for the people who live in this area."

Service at Meadows began in April. Routes include buses into the downtown and Grant MacEwan University campus.
