Body found on Red Deer walking trail, major crimes unit investigates

The RCMP major crimes unit has been brought in to investigate a sudden death in Red Deer’s south-end.

Details on the cause of death have not been released

Police were called to the scene, near the corner of 104 Avenue and 101 Street, on Feb 21.

A man's body was discovered on the walking trails, east of Bower Place Mall, Tuesday at approximately 6:45 p.m., according to RCMP.

Red Deer police, RCMP and paramedics were dispatched to the area — near the Sunnybrook neighbourhood— and located the male. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Calgary RCMP major crimes unit has taken over the investigation..

RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott says police have not yet been able to determine the man's age or identity. 

"We're unable to provide any information about him until we make a positive identification," she said.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday. 

Scott says police are asking people to stay away from the walking trails east of the Bower Place Mall. The area has been cordoned-off by police. 

The RCMP is canvassing the neighbourhood to determine if anyone witnessed any unusual activity near the scene.
