A man who allegedly led police on a high speed chase in a stolen vehicle early Friday morning was clocked doing 254 km/hr on Anthony Henday Drive.

The chase made its way through several residential areas before the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu crashed near Range Road 261 and Township Road 514.

"Going 154 kilometres over the limit, we're talking about absolute — I mean, it could have been a catastrophe," said Edmonton Police spokeswoman Leila Daoud.

"Really, we're very lucky that people weren't injured, that families weren't involved in this. It's absolutely dangerous behaviour."

The 27-year-old man fled after crashing the car. The suspect was arrested Friday afternoon near Quadrant Avenue and 215th Street.

Charges are pending against him.

A woman who was in the vehicle was arrested at the scene of the crash. She is charged with possession of drugs and possession of stolen property.
