Alberta RCMP shoot, kill armed man in Onoway
A man is dead after he was shot by RCMP at an apartment building in Onoway, Alta.
Two officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at the building at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday where they were confronted by a 49-year-old man with a knife, said police.
Both officers, one with three years on the force, fired numerous times, said Clif Purvis, with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team which is investigating the shooting.
The officers were not hurt.
A neighbour who lived above the suite where the shooting occured said he heard three or four shots.
The argument started at about 6:30 p.m. and involved the man, who lived on the third floor, and his daughter's boyfriend, who lived on the first floor, said Ferlin Aginas, 33.
Apartment residents tried to coax the man out of the first-floor suite, but ended up calling police, said Aginas.
"We tried talking him down."
Aginas described the man as quiet and hard to get to know.
A machette and a locking six-centimetre knife were recovered from the scene, said Purvis.
ASIRT investigates all serious injuries or deaths resulting from the actions of a police officer.
Onoway is 70 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
