Alberta man drowns in N.Y. state trying to save dog
Three Hills man dies in hospital
A Three Hills, Alta., man who jumped into a pond in New York state to save a dog from drowning has died.
Earl Gallant went into the four-metre-deep pond last Wednesday when he saw his friend's 14-year-old Labrador retriever struggling in the pond.
About five metres from shore, Gallant told his friend on shore he was running out of steam. He then dropped below the surface.
State troopers arrived at the site about five minutes after they got the call, said Insp. Jennifer Cole.
Paramedics performed CPR and got Gallant to hospital where he was stabilized, but after he was moved to another hospital, he died without ever regaining consciousness.
Gallant was staying in the Bath area, southeast of Buffalo, doing work for oil companies, Cole said.
The dog eventually got out of the water on its own.
