A 74-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 2 south of Edmonton.

Edmonton police were called to the scene of the collision on Calgary Trail and 41st Avenue SW at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Traffic section investigators say the man was driving a 2005 Ford Escape southbound on Calgary Trail approaching the 41st Avenue SW underpass in the far left lane when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle veered off the road and struck a support pillar for the overpass, police said in a news release. The driver died on scene.

Police shut down southbound lanes on the QEII at 41st Avenue SW.

The section of road, about 15 kilometres north of the Edmonton International Airport, was expected to be closed into the night as police conducted a full investigation.

All traffic was being diverted through the overpass on 41st Avenue SW to continue southbound, with police recommending that people heading toward the Edmonton International Airport take another route if possible.
