When Bradley and Michael Hefferon were married, they had no idea their union would cause their expulsion from the country they call home, throwing their new family into turmoil.

The couple met and was married in Toronto but moved to Wisconsin to care for Michael’s ailing mother. Returning from a visit north and passing through the Windsor-Detroit border crossing, Bradley, a Canadian citizen, was barred from the United States for five years on suspicion of living in the country illegally; Bradley’s spousal rights are not legally recognized south of the border.

The CBC’s Ron Charles visited the couple at Bradley’s parents’ home in Stayner, Ont.
