Contaminated water in Shannon

In Shannon, 20 kilometres northwest of Quebec City, 31 wells are contaminated with a chemical that can potentially cause cancer.

Bottled water is being supplied to residents and the provincial Environment Department is going to pay for filtration systems to remove the chemical from the well water.

Lucie Laperle has one of the contaminated wells in Shannon. She worries she may never learn where the trichlorethylene pollution originated.

"That's one of the things I'm afraid of, that it may be a huge cover-up," she says. She's concerned that dangerous material might have been buried in the area without the residents being informed.

Laperle says she wants a citizens committee formed to participate in all the discussions about the pollution held between the town, the Department of National Defence, and the province.
