Casino announced for Thousand Islands
The Ontario government will allow only one more charity casino to be built in the next three years -- and it will be in the Thousand Islands area.
Now an exact location needs to be chosen.
There are only four communities with a chance of landing the new casino. Ranked in order of preference, the favoured communities are Front of Leeds and Lansdowne, followed by Gananoque, Prescott and Brockville.
Any municipalities wanting to host a casino must hold a referendum. The government says it doesn't want communities to waste their money in this fall's local elections if they're not even in the running.
Management Board Chairman Chris Hodgson says there will be a three-year moratorium on any further casinos while the market is assessed.
He also says there won't be any more video lottery terminals installed in Ontario race tracks during that same three-year assessment period.
