Town's historic theatre repairable after windstorm

A historic theatre in Strathmore east of Calgary that was damaged by a windstorm on Sunday can be saved, its owner says.

A historic theatre in Strathmore east of Calgary that was damaged by a windstorm on Sunday can be saved, its owner says.

The sudden storm knocked down a firewall attached to the Joyland Theatre while the building was full for a matinee.

No one was hurt, but the theatre's owners were not sure initially if the 100-year-old building had suffered structural damage.

On Monday owner Sheila Crispin was told that the town landmark can be fixed.

"I don't know if they've even decided how they're going to fix that, but at least it's not a tear down. So that's all I'm happy about," she said.

The windstorm struck at about 1 p.m. MT Sunday.  The Calgary Fire Department responded to more than 50 incidents of debris on roadways, blown over trees and downed power lines in the city.
