Five teenage girls are safe after disappearing during a rafting trip on the Little Red Deer River near Bowden.

Late Wednesday afternoon the girls, aged 12 to 14, left the Red Lodge Park on tubes and rafts.

They were supposed to return within 30 minutes.

When the girls were five hours past due and their families couldn’t find them, they contacted RCMP.

The children were located by a relative after spending eight hours lost in the wilderness without shoes or emergency provisions.

They were cold and had sore feet, but were otherwise in good spirits, RCMP said.
