A 15-year-old southern Alberta boy is dead after the car he was driving went off a road and struck a tree and a fence.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. Wednesday in Chestermere, just east of Calgary, on Merganser Drive near the intersection of McIvor Terrace.

RCMP say the car hit a curb, which caused it to cross the centre line of the road.

The vehicle, carrying just one person, then hit the tree and fence before coming to rest.

The Chestermere teen died at the scene.

Police believe speed was a factor in the accident.

"This is a tragic loss for both the family and our community as a whole. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time", said Staff Sgt. Mark  Wielgosz in a release.

Traffic in the area was affected for several hours.
