A small strip of downtown Calgary is being turned into a street park for the next two weeks.

The move is part of a pilot project by the city to bring more vitality — and more people —  to the downtown core. The park will be located at 10th Street S.W. between Sixth and Seventh Avenue, an area not normally busy on weekends and evenings.

"That's one of the reasons we actually chose this street," said Dawn Thome with the City of Calgary. "It's very, very quiet on the weekends — very low traffic volume, very low pedestrian volume. So we really wanted to see that pick up."

The concept for the street park came out of a city hall study from 2006.

If all goes well, the plan is to make similar street parks available to communities all over the city.
