A smoke detector alerted seven people in a townhouse of fire, allowing them to escape unharmed, firefighters say.

Fire crews arrived at the complex in the 100 block of Tarawood Lane N.E. just after midnight on Monday to find flames and smoke already coming from a second storey bedroom window.

Damage was confined to that unit. Eight people evacuated from other residences in the complex are now back home.

The cause is still under investigation, but damage is estimated at about $50,000.

"Smoke alarms provide the best early warning system in the event of a fire," the fire department said in a press release. "Early detection of fires saves lives and reduces damage to houses and contents."
