RCMP arrest Strathmore standoff suspect
Standoff began after woman fled from the house and called police
The man at the centre of an RCMP standoff in Strathmore has been arrested.
RCMP say the man surrendered to police just before 3 p.m. MT Sunday following a standoff that lasted several hours.
Officials responded to a residence around 1:30 a.m. after a woman fled from the home to a neighbour's house and called police, who arrived later Sunday morning with a search warrant, said RCMP spokesperson Patricia Neely.
At that point, the man barricaded himself in the house. Officials confirmed he is known to police.
They are not releasing his name, but the 39-year-old has been charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement, obstruction of a peace officer and breaching conditions of release.
The man is currently in custody and is expected to appear in Drumheller provincial court Aug. 16.
