Pilot error caused deadly helicopter crash, report says
B.C. pilot Matthew Goodine died in 2012 crash on mountain near Canmore
Federal investigators are blaming pilot error for a deadly helicopter crash near Canmore last year.
Matthew Goodine, 28, of Prince George, B.C., died after the chopper he piloted crashed into Grotto Mountain, near Canmore.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigator John Lee said the pilot was not prepared for this kind of journey and flew too close to the mountainous terrain.
"We found that the pilot had minimal mountain flying training and experience," Lee said.
Four passengers on board the chopper survived.
Goodine, who was working for Kananaskis Mountain Helicopters, was not wearing a helmet.
The company now requires all pilots to wear helmets and take mountain flying training.
