26-year-old male wearing dark clothing hit by car while walking on freeway

Calgary police say dark clothing and a broken street light may have played a role in a pedestrian fatality early Saturday morning.

A 26-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a car on Deerfoot Trail near Airport Trail just before 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

The man was walking on the freeway when he was hit by the vehicle. He sustained fatal head injuries.

Calgary police say the 21-year-old driver was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian. He will not be charged.

Sgt. Colin Foster says there were a number of factors that likely contributed to the collision.

"We will be looking at whether alcohol played a part on the behalf of the pedestrian. We are looking at the victim's clothing, which was dark and also the fact that one of the streetlights was out is also being factored in."

Police are trying to determine why the man was walking on Deerfoot Trail, the city's major north-south freeway.
