Opponents appeal above ground Heartland Transmission line
Power line would run past Sherwood Park homes, school
Opponents of the Heartland Transmission line are appealing a decision that would see the line run above ground and past homes.
The 500 kilovolt, double-circuit line will run past homes in Sherwood Park and a school, prompting calls for EPCOR and AltaLink to bury it.
But the companies said that would double the cost and the Alberta Utilities Commission approved the multi-million dollar project in November.
Garnett Genuis of the Responsible Electricity Transmission for Albertans said the group is challenging the assertion put forward by the utilities commission that there would be problems with the underground option.
"We're asking them to reconsider their decision, we're asking them to not allow big overhead lines to go through."
The group has put forward an application to the commission and is waiting to hear back, said Genuis.
