Officials gear up for busiest Stampede weekend

Emergency officials are gearing up for the last and busiest weekend of the Calgary Stampede — and warning revellers to watch their alcohol intake.

Emergency officials are gearing up for the last and busiest weekend of the Calgary Stampede — and warning revellers to watch their alcohol intake.

Police say there are more guests in the drunk tank than in previous years, and the number of disturbance calls is also up.

"Any time people ingest alcohol, you become invincible," said Adam Loria with Calgary Emergency Medical Services.

"You think you're 10 feet tall, 'Nothing will hurt me, I can do anything.' I've seen everything from car surfing to jaywalking — everything under the sun you can think of, it happens."

Officials say Stampede attendance is up slightly this year — nearly 134,000 people attended on Friday night, up from 124,000 in 2010. Overall attendance for 2011 is estimated at about 905,000, up from about 891,000 in 2010.

Loria advised those headed to the Stampede over the weekend to dress for the heat, wear sunscreen and stay as hydrated as possible — with water or juice rather than booze.
