Man struck with toilet tank lid dies; murder charge laid

A man hit over the head with the lid of a toilet water tank while at a Calgary nightclub early Thursday morning has died in hospital from his injuries, police said.

A man hit over the head with the lid of a toilet water tank while at a Calgary nightclub early Thursday morning has died in hospital from his injuries, police said.

A 25-year-old Calgary man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death.

The victim will not be identified until an autopsy is completed on Monday, and all of his next of kin have been notified, Calgary police said in a release Friday afternoon.

A suspect was identified by witnesses, who followed him to a nearby casino, where he was taken into custody by police.

When police arrived at Cowboy's nightclub in the 1000 block of Olympic Way S.E. on Thursday, they found the victim, who is in his mid-20s, unconscious inside the nightclub.

Calgary police acting Staff Sgt. Patty McCallum said a lot of people saw what happened in the bar, and police would like more witnesses to come forward.

"Well, we would encourage more people to come forward," she said. "But I think the problem … [is] that when you have a large group like that, there is the assumption that other people will come forward.

"We have had witnesses come forward, but we would like to talk to more."

McCallum said the two men knew each other and it appears they had had a previous dispute. She said police did not think the two were at the nightclub together.

This is Calgary’s 25th homicide this year.
