Calgary police say they are in the early stages of investigating what they are calling a suspicious death.

Police and emergency response crews responded to a call Tuesday of a man collapsing in a front yard in the 1900 block of 49th Avenue S.W. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.

The man's name will not be released until the next of kin are notified and the medical examiner's office finishes its investigation into the death.

Investigators with the police service's homicide unit are also looking into the incident. The investigation is in the preliminary stages, but the man's death has been classified as suspicious, according to the release.

Police intend to release more information as it comes in to seek assistance from the public. They are asking those with information about the incident to call the Calgary Police Service at (403) 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.

Police are still investigating a suspicious death Monday in the downtown core. That morning, officers discovered a man's body as they were responding to reports of gunshots in an alley between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue at 8th Street S.W.

On Monday night, Calgary police responded to a shooting in the Sandstone neighbourhood. No one was injured in that incident, but one of three vehicles officers stopped at the scene appeared to have bullet holes. Four people were taken into custody for questioning.

Pedestrian in hospital after being hit by car

The city's paramedics were kept busy with more than 200 calls from 6 p.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. The calls included 19 motor vehicle collisions, one of which landed a 21-year-old man in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man was struck by a car travelling westbound on 11th Avenue by 5th Street S.W. at about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. The car, a 1991 Mazda 626, mounted the curb on the southwest corner of the street and hit the man along with numerous bollards before stopping on the sidewalk, according to a release.

The 28-year-old male driver of the car was not injured in the collision. Alcohol may have been a factor, police say. Investigators are asking any witnesses to contact police.

Paramedics also responded to 18 assaults and four stabbings.
