Man dies of injuries sustained in S.W. house fire

A man who sustained serious injuries in a house fire in southwest Calgary on Wednesday has died.

A man who sustained serious injuries in a house fire in southwest Calgary on Wednesday has died.

Fire crews were called to house on 15th Street and 18th Avenue S.W. shortly after 10 a.m.

They removed a man in his mid-50s from the house, carrying him to a waiting ambulance before going back into the house to fight the fire.

"He was unconscious. He was found laying down a little distance away from the fire," said Calgary fire department spokesman Brian McAsey.

The man had no vital signs when he was taken out of the house, said EMS spokesman Adam Loria. But he was revived on scene and rushed to hospital in critical condition, he said.

The man later died in hospital, police said Wednesday afternoon.

The living room of the home was fully engulfed in flames. Crews were able to contain the flames to the one room and extinguished the fire quickly, McAsey said.

It isn't known yet what caused the fire.

Calgary police are investigating, along with the fire department.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.
