Around 1 a.m. on March 30, several people in the northeast Calgary community of Pineridge called 911 reporting gunshots.

Castle, 39, was found in medical distress when police arrived. He died at the scene.

A second victim was also shot at the scene but survived.

Castle was born in Regina and adopted when he was just over a year old, according to his obituary.

His family described him as a "kind and delightful child full of curiosity and energy," but they also said he struggled with substance abuse for much of his life.

Olds shooting

On March 25, Olds RCMP issued warrants for Vance's arrest in connection with a shooting near the town.

Police said at the time that three people — allegedly including Vance — went to see the victim on March 20 to "settle a dispute over money and belongings."

The discussion became heated, RCMP said, at which point one of the men allegedly shot the victim. Vance faced 10 charges stemming from that incident.

RCMP released Vance's photo but warned the public not to approach him, alleging that he could be armed and dangerous.

Vance is scheduled to appear in court on June 22.
