Lightning strikes tree, sparks fire

A tree outside a townhome in southeast Calgary burst into flames after a lighting strike on Tuesday afternoon as a severe thunderstorm quickly rolled over the city.
The fast moving storm brought rain and some hail to parts of the city. But the mid-afternoon storm was short-lived for Calgary.
A severe thunderstorm warning from Environment Canada was lifted for Calgary just after 4 p.m. MT, but it remained in effect for regions north and east of the city.
The tree fire, which happened near Bonaventure Drive and 109th Avenue S.E. was put out within minutes, fire officials said. There were no injuries and no damage to surrounding homes.
