One of six people injured in a collision on Sunday evening near Longview has died, RCMP say.

The six people were sent to hospital after a motorcycle and an SUV collided on a highway near High River Sunday evening, paramedics said in a media release.

EMS was called to Highway 22 just north of Highway 540 West in the M.D. of Foothills south of Longview at about 5 p.m.

RCMP say the SUV was doing a U-turn across the highway when the northbound motorcycle struck the side of the vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Oilfields Hospital, where he later died.

The passenger, a school-aged child, sustained life-threatening injuries and was sent to Alberta Children's Hospital by STARS air ambulance. The child remains in stable condition.

Four other people involved in the collision were hospitalized with minor injuries, including two children and an adult man and woman.

"Although the investigation is ongoing, speed and driver error are believed to be factors," RCMP say.

A 39-year-old man from Washington state has been charged with making an unsafe U-turn.
