Multiple sightings of grizzly bears and black bears have been reported at Grassi Lakes trail, a popular hiking spot near Canmore, officials warn.

A warning was issued on Sunday and will remains in effect until further notice, Alberta Parks says.

It covers the Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail and the Grassi Lakes Upper Trail.

"Although a warning is in place for this area, bears can be encountered anywhere in Kananaskis Country and at any time," the province said on its website.

Officials are reminding hikers to take these precautions to avoid a surprise encounter with a bear:

  • Make lots of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep pets on leashes.
  • Carry bear spray within reach, and know how to use it.
