Garbage bags of stolen mail lead to charges by Calgary police
2 people charged with mail theft and identity fraud
Two people are facing more than 40 charges after Calgary investigators found garbage bags full of stolen mail in a hotel room, police say.
Officers were called to a hotel room in the 9200 block of Macleod Trail S.E. in May after someone reported suspicious activity.
While executing a search warrant investigators found garbage bags full of stolen mail, notebooks with credit card data and identity information.
They also found nine keys which police believe belong to apartment mailboxes, as well as debit and credit cards and a small amount of the drug ecstasy.
Police believe the two suspects are part of an organized group that was stealing mail to create fake cheques for bank fraud.
The man and woman were arrested when they returned to the hotel room while investigators were on the scene.
The charges include possession of stolen property, mail theft and identity fraud.
