A dog is recovering in Calgary after it was found suffering from what its rescuers describe as one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they've ever seen.

Phoenix, a chocolate Labrador-cross was found on the highway south of Calgary near Fort Macleod about five weeks ago.

The emaciated dog had broken bones, an infected eye and was suffering from numerous wounds from porcupine quills.

It is now recovering at a veterinarian clinic in Calgary, where it will stay for several more weeks. Phoenix will likely lose an eye, the veterinarian said.

YouTube video released by Pound Rescue, the organization based in Okotoks that saved the dog, showed how badly hurt the animal was when it was rescued.

Donations to the dog's recovery can be made at poundrescue.com.
