Flu shots popular choice in Calgary
More than 50,000 people have had their seasonal flu shots in Calgary so far this year, officials say.
According to Alberta Health Services, more people have already been vaccinated in 2011 compared to last season.
Dr. Richard Musto, Calgary's medical officer of health, said the higher immunization rate shows that people are taking flu more seriously.
"I think there’s general awareness that influenza is a significant illness. It’s not just a cold," he said.
"I think people are more aware, they realize it’s a very effective and easy, safe thing to do to improve their health."
Musto added that people can help stop spreading the virus by staying home from work when they are unwell.
Immunization clinic schedules are listed on the Alberta Heath Services website.
