Fire crews put out a blaze at a gas station in northeast Calgary early Monday morning.

When firefighters arrived at the Petro Canada station on 16th Avenue at Sixth Street N.E. just after 5 a.m. MT, flames and smoke were coming out the roof and canopy, officials said.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to the pumps, but because the blaze was lodged inside the roof, crews at first had a hard time gaining access to the root of the fire, officials said.

Westbound 16th Avenue was closed during part of the morning commute while crews brought the fire under control.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
