Exshaw celebrates anniversary
Flood-damaged mountain hamlet takes stock on anniversary
The hamlet of Exshaw is celebrating an anniversary this weekend and it comes at a good time for flood-weary residents.
This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the incorporation of the municipal district of Bighorn.
Three of the five hamlets in the district were badly flooded in June. Two small creeks near Exshaw became raging torrents, leaving a trail of mud and silt several feet deep.
Half of the homes in Exshaw sustained some damage and 25 per cent of the houses in the hamlet were severely damaged by the floods. The hamlet is now installing trailers for some 25 residents who are unable to return to their homes.
Margaret Blokhuis is still unable to return and she is frustrated with the pace of rebuilding.
"You can't even get trades to come out and give you a quote. You can't get answers from the government, you can't get answers from your insurance company, you don't know where you're headed or how much in debt you're going to go into" she said.
Local residents say they needed something to celebrate after living through the flood.
