Experts predict Vancouver condo crisis will hit Calgary
Some local experts in Calgary say the city is going through the same leaky condo woes as Vancouver, only it is in slow motion here.
Tony Gioventu, with the Home Owners Association of B.C., said the situation in Vancouver during the 1980s and 1990s was "devastating," but things are now improving.
"Compared to what we had in the 1990s — we have an overwhelming improvement in the system," Gioventu said. "And certainly buildings are built at a much more superior standard."
Tang Lee, who teaches architecture at the University of Calgary, says he is starting to see the symptoms of leaky condos in Vancouver.
"The evidence and symptoms showed up [in Vancouver] first," Gioventu said. "But in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, we don't have as much rain but it's starting to show up as well."
Industry experts in Alberta say provincial standards need to improve here, including longer warranties for condo owners.
If not, they believe the problems with leaks and mould will get worse.
