Electricity operator asks Albertans to power down

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is renewing its request for Albertans to cut their use of electricity.

Operator renews request after asking users to conserve last weekend

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is renewing its request for Albertans to cut their use of electricity.

The operator originally asked Albertans to conserve their use over the long weekend.

Spokesperson Dawn Dellaney said the operator is dealing with a combination of factors including warm weather and lack of wind.

"The intertie that connects us to British Columbia is currently downed for some planned maintenance so that's preventing us from importing power, and coincidentally, the other intertie that connects us into Saskatchewan is currently down for an unplanned outage."

The AESO is asking users to turn off lights, limit the use of air conditioning and try not to use major appliances until 7 p.m. Wednesday.
