Drumheller prison locked down after inmate assaulted

The Drumheller Institution is in lockdown after an inmate was assaulted over the weekend.

The inmate was taken to hospital after he was found at 7:40 p.m. MT Saturday, Correctional Service Canada officials said in a news release.

Officials said the extent of the inmate’s injuries wasn’t known.

The medium-security prison, which is 135 kilometres northeast of Calgary, will reopen when officials decide it’s safe to do so.

RCMP and federal correctional officials are investigating the incident.
