Diesel fuel leaking from derailed train north of Lethbridge, Alta.
Traffic tangles as public asked to avoid area
Diesel fuel is leaking from the engine car of a train that derailed Wednesday morning north of Lethbridge, Alta., police said in a release.
Emergency crews including Picture Butte RCMP, CP Rail, local fire and a hazardous materials team from Calgary responded after the engine car of a train went off the tracks around 9:30 a.m., south of the village of Barons, near Highway 23 and Township Road 120.
Fuel cars, which were empty at the time, tipped over, police said.
The angle the engine car is resting at "is causing diesel fuel to leak from the fuel entry point."
There are no reported injuries, and vehicle traffic in both directions is expected to be diverted for several hours. Police are asking the public the avoid the area if possible.
