Calgary to test out first street park or S-park
Calgary will soon have its first street park or 'S-park.'
A council committee approved a motion Tuesday to close a downtown street to traffic from Aug. 9 to Sept. 9 to create a unique community space.
Ald. John Mar says if council gives its okay this month, cars will be off 10th Street SW between Sixth and Seventh Avenues to make way for a month of community activities.
"It was designed specifically to be fairly low impact in terms of commuter traffic," Mar said. "It was something that the downtown community association was very, very excited about, so it's important to have not only the commitment from the administration but also from the host neighbourhood."
The pilot project will cost $90,000, with most of the money going towards temporary furniture, planters and banners that can also be used at other locations.
