The Calgary Police Service's homicide unit is investigating how two men are connected after one was killed and another sent to hospital following a shooting outside of a downtown nightclub early Sunday morning.

Police were called to Junction Underground just before 2:45 a.m. for reports that someone had been shot outside the bar, located on 8th Avenue southwest.

When police arrived, they found a man in his 30s who was in "serious medical distress." He was sent to hospital in life-threatening condition, where he died shortly later, police said in a news release.

While the man was being transported to hospital, officers secured the scene and searched the area for suspects. As police searched, a second man in his 30s arrived at the Foothills Medical Centre with gunshot wounds, police say.

Calgary police officers were called to the hospital and believe the man is connected to the shooting. He remains in hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

"It is very early in the investigation and we are working to determine what happened and how the two men are connected," police said the news release.

The victim's identity cannot be released until after an autopsy, which is scheduled for early next week, police say. More information will be shared once it is known.

As of 10:45 a.m. Sunday, 8th Avenue southwest, between 5th Street southwest and 6th Street southwest, is blocked off to traffic so police can continue to investigate.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the CPS' non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
