A house fire in the southeast Calgary community of Auburn Bay on Friday afternoon has displaced two families from their homes, the Calgary Fire Department said in a release.

Crews responded to reports of a house fire in the 100 block of Auburn Glen Lane S.E. just before 1 p.m.

Heavy flames and smoke from a single home soon spread to a neighbouring one, which brought around 40 firefighters to the scene.

"Firefighters quickly attacked the fire by extending hand lines and setting up an aerial ladder to control the fire as well as to protect neighbouring exposures from the exterior," said the fire department in a release.

All residents had evacuated their houses before the fire department arrived. One person was assessed for potential smoke inhalation but did not need to be treated at hospital.

Two homes were "significantly damaged," said the fire department, displacing seven residents for an unknown amount of time. Two neighbouring homes also have moderate exterior damage, but residents can return once it is safe.

The fire has since been classified as under control, but the release says crews will remain on scene to monitor any hot spots.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
