Mahogany residents had to leave their homes Saturday after an explosive device was discovered inside a large rock in that neighbourhood.

Calgary police called in the bomb squad after a resident found a piece of Det Cord – an explosive used to break rocks into smaller pieces – inside the rock.

The explosive is usually used in places like quarries. It isn't clear how the rock ended up in Mahogany.

No one was hurt and the bomb squad neutralized the explosive after taking it to a safe location.
