Winter weather blankets southern Alberta
Heavy snowfall expected in Kananaskis-Canmore, Banff and Jasper National parks
Parts of southern Alberta are in store for an intense bout of winter weather Saturday, as heavy snowfall reduces visibility to near zero in some areas.
Areas around Banff and along Highway 93, from Jasper to Saskatchewan River Crossing and Lake Louise to Saskatchewan River Crossing, can experience reduced visibility and remain under a winter storm warning.
Near Banff, and in the Kananaskis and Canmore areas, heavy snowfall of up to 25 cm is expected, which should taper off Sunday morning, Environment Canada said.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday, there were also weather warnings in effect for the following regions:
- Cypress Hills Provincial Park.
- Kananaskis-Canmore.
- Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield.
- Banff National Park.
- Jasper National Park.
Earlier in the afternoon, Environment Canada issued snow squall warnings for wide swaths of southern Alberta but most have expired or downgraded to winter storm and wind warnings.
The areas of Calgary, Airdrie-Cochrane-Olds-Sundre and Drumheller-Three Hills were all warned of snow squalls when brief but intense bursts of heavy snow are expected to create near-zero visibility.
